Attention, Spring Breakers: Sharks Dig Heavy Metal

Whether you live on the beach or you’re just trying to escape the unpredictable highs and lows of the transition from winter to fall that is the entire month of March, you may be joining spring breakers in beach towns this time of year.

And if you’re one to swim in the ocean, you’ve probably heard all the tricks—shiny jewelry attracts sharks, punch a shark in the nose if you’re attacked, etc. But you may not have heard this one fun fact: Sharks are attracted to death metal like a moth to a flame.

According to one Discovery Channel film crew, the deep, low frequencies of metal mimic those of struggling fish. And, more importantly, these are sharks we’re talking about. Is there any kind of music more fitting for sharks than metal? But I digress.

Watch what happens when some heavy metal is brought underwater in this 2015 Shark Week Special, Bride of Jaws.

Our best advice? Leave the music in your hotel room.
